Verve Wine
Take it back to 1937 — the year Verve Magazine debuted in Paris with a cover painted by Henri Matisse. Verve Magazine threw the spotlight on artists who were doing the coolest things out there - without any of the usual pretension. That’s what inspired us to start Verve Wine in 2016. To us, people who love to drink great wine, the best part of wine is sharing in the discovery of it all. We wanted Verve Wine to not simply be a place to buy wine but also a source of inspiration to a community of fun, curious drinkers just like us. Four years in and we’re still curious and still having a ton of fun.

The story of Weingut Winkler-Hermaden and its home in a striking 11th-century castle starts with a “small, tough” woman. That woman, Magdalene Helene, was current proprietor Georg Winkler-Hermaden’s grandmother. When he found her diary, which she kept from her arrival at the Schloss Kapfenstein in 1916 through the Second World War, he “began to read and couldn’t stop until the book was finished.”

When Paul Clifton was a teenager growing up in Salinas, Calif., he knew which way the wind was blowing by following the scent of chocolate from a nearby factory. He used this as a clue to the day’s surfing conditions — his first passion was out in the waves of the Pacific. As director of winemaking for Hahn Family Wines in the Santa Lucia Highlands, his other passion is now in the vineyard, where his surfing knowledge has proven unexpectedly applicable.
